Will Fence owns a 70-acre large timber and Christmas tree farm. The Christmas farm gets busy in August and September when Will identifies and flags the trees suitable for the Christmas season. Starting in October, the flagged trees will be cut, baled, and trucked to the storage yard where they will stay until shipped. The storage yard is situated in an area that offers shade and protection from the wind to maintain the freshness of the tree. The trees are stacked with the tops locked together to keep the sun and wind away from them. Will has just purchased an additional 40 acres and will need to expand his storage yard by 40,000 square feet. The budget for this expansion is $55,000. Will has hired your team to design a process to contract resources to expand the storage yard.

 Question

Psychoactive Drugs
and Their Effects on the Brain

Your roommate Gretchen has had chronic pain issues since she broke her back in a car accident about a year ago. You know that she finished her prescription pain killers at least three months ago, but you’re suspicious she’s been taking something else. Quite frequently you find Gretchen passed out in her room, and when she is awake, she doesn’t seem to care about much. She stopped going to class and says her pain is way better than it was a few months ago. You got really worried last week when you found a syringe laying on the bathroom floor and then found out from your landlord that Gretchen never paid her share of the rent. What drug is Gretchen on?

Choose at least 4 of the following questions to discuss:

1. What drug has the individual in this case been using? What led you to believe this?

2. What are the subjective effects of the drug (i.e., what has a person reported feeling after using the drug)?

3. What receptors, transporters, or neurotransmitters could be involved? How does the drug affect these receptors, transporters, or neurotransmitters?

4. Provide at least one relevant website concerning the drug in question.

5. Is this drug addictive? What are the consequences of continued use of this drug?

6. Putting yourself in the role of a professional counselor or biological psychologist, what advice do you have for concerned family or friends of someone using this drug?

Psychoactive Drugs and their Effects on the Brain

You made plans with your friend Jason to order some pizza and watch the new Transformers movie. When you arrive at Jason’s apartment you smell a distinctive odor in the hall. When you open his door, a smoky cloud lingers in the living room. Jason has invited his cousin Max over and they seem to have been smoking something. Their eyes are red, they seem extremely relaxed, and there are food and candy wrappers all over the place. Jason says that he totally forgot you were coming over, but you should stay and hang out anyway. What have Jason and Max been smoking?

Choose at least 4 of the following questions to answer:

1. What drug has the individual in this case been using? What led you to believe this?

Speak Up:  Bob’s Case

Bob is a 33-year-old right-handed man who was recently found sprawled on the floor by his wife. When he woke, he was dragging his right leg, had a right facial droop, and didn’t appear to understand anything said to him. After being rushed to the ER, the doctors diagnosed a dense right hemiparesis (weakness). Doctors also noticed that while his speech was rapid and fluent, he was quite unintelligible. He showed no slurring
or stilting of his speech, and his overall articulation was fine. Bob had absolutely no trouble getting words out—the problem was that once they were out they made no sense!

During his neuropsychological assessment, his doctor asked him to repeat sentences such as “will you answer the telephone?” More often than not, he would answer the questions (“yes I will” or “no, it’s on the ground”)
rather than repeat the sentence. His spontaneous speech was filled with neologisms (made-up words) and jargon. In fact, one of his doctors commented that Bob’s speech was reminiscent of the “Jabberwocky” poem by Lewis Carroll (i.e., “Twas brillig, and the slithy toves … Did gyre and gimble in the wabe”).

Bob was unable to comprehend written text or write coherently (his written work read much like his spoken words sounded; fluent but empty). And, to all intents and purposes, Bob seemed completely unaware of his condition.

For more information on parts of the brain that might be affected:  Go to:http://sciencecases.lib.buffalo.edu/cs/ enter Speak Up in the Search box download the cases, then scroll down to pages 8 and 9.

 Please discuss the following:

1. What condition or conditions (there may be more than one possibility) are being described in this case? Let us know why you think this is the case, and provide one website that might justify your position.

2. What brain area or area(s) may be involved (be sure to consider which language functions are compromised too, and be specific as to which hemisphere)? How should they function normally?

3. What could be causing this dysfunction?

4. What do the patient’s symptoms tell you about his/her language abilities and how they may be impaired?

Creating a rough draft of a contract

Previous week you were introduced to the Course Project for this course. Now that the negotiations between you and Mr. Barker are done, you are tasked with the job of drafting the contract that will finalize this deal.

For this week, you will get to practice your contract drafting skills by creating a rough draft of a contract for this toy transaction.

Based on the information from the worksheet from last week, you are to build a formal, written contract. You will need to include:

  1. PartiesThe names and addresses of all the contracting parties should be clearly stated. You can make these up for this contract.
  2. DatesList the date that the contract is being entered into.
  3. Definitions and InterpretationsIf there are any defined terms in the contract, this section should provide specific and clear definitions.
  4. Payment ProvisionsThe exact price to be paid for the goods or services provided and the date or dates for payment to be made should be clearly set out. Remember, you want cash and not a check or credit card for this contract.
  5. A specific description of the set of toys should be stated in this section.
  6. Term of contractThe length of the contract should be stated and it should also be noted whether there are any options to continue the contract. This is a contract for this specific instance and should be noted in the contract.
  7. Limitation of liabilityThis section caps the liability of either party to the contract. For example, Mr. Barker has inspected the set of toys and accepts them “as is.” If he finds a defect with them at a later date, you have no further responsibility to him.
  8. Signature LinesProvide proper signature and date lines at the conclusion of the contract for both parties.

***Besides including the above list and the standard elements of a contract, you are to also include the following clauses into your formal, written contract between you and Mr. Barker:

1.     A Mandated Alternative Dispute clause.

2.     Act of God/ Force Majeure Clause in case the toys are destroyed by a natural disaster.

Discussion 1: Systems Theory in Social Work Practice

Family systems provide safety and support for their members. To many, organizational and societal systems also are expected to function in a similar way. When these systems fail, how do social workers identify those failures? Further, how can an understanding of these systems help them intervene? Systems theory is concerned with the structure of complex systems, with a special emphasis on how parts of these systems relate to each other and to the systems as a whole. Social workers apply systems theory to micro, meso , and macro levels of practice, in order to understand the dynamic interrelations between individuals, families, institutions, and societies. Generally, social workers want to identify how a system functions, what aspects of that system have a negative impact on people, and understand how they can cause positive change in that system.

For this week’s Discussion, review this week’s resources, including the course-specific case studies provided. Select either the case study for Noah or Carl, as well as a theory from this week’s assigned reading. Then, consider the various social systems involved in the course-specific case study you selected and how the social systems might relate to one another. Finally, think about the systems theory you selected and how it can be applied to that case study.

·       Post an explanation of the various social systems involved in the case study you selected.

·       Be sure to reference in your post the client from the course-specific case study you selected.

·       Then, explain how these social systems might relate to one another.

·       Finally, describe the systems theory you selected and explain how you might apply it to that case study using specific social work skills.

Working With Children and Adolescents: The Case of Noah

Working With Children and Adolescents: The Case of Noah Noah is a 10-year-old, multiracial male who is currently in foster care. Prior to the foster care placement, he was hospitalized three times in 3 months as a result of increased aggression, disruptive outbursts, and self-harm behaviors. Noah has a long history of dangerous behaviors, including twice jumping out of a moving vehicle, breaking a peer’s leg, making suicidal and homicidal threats, and killing a dog. Noah was living with his mother, stepfather, full brother (Edgar), and three half-siblings in his home state before his dangerous behaviors increased in severity 2 years ago. At that point, Noah’s mother’s marriage ended, and she left Noah and his brother Edgar in the care of his paternal grandfather in another state. Noah’s behavior during this period included cutting himself, fighting, and threatening to burn the school down. The latter two incidents resulted in Noah’s suspension from school. His grandfather sought assistance from the county, and social services began working with the family. However, Noah continued to exhibit behavioral problems, including those that resulted in his hospitalizations. After his last hospitalization, Noah’s mother took him and Edgar to live with her in a different county. The hospital made a referral for a children’s mental health caseworker to work with the family. Within a month of reuniting, Noah’s mother called law enforcement in response to Noah’s out-of-control behavior. Noah had been running down the highway and screaming that his mother had put bleach in his eyes. His mother explained her concerns to the case manager, saying that she was overwhelmed with Noah’s behavior and felt she could not handle him any longer. The county had been receiving child protection reports regarding Noah’s out-of-control behavior as well as concerns that his mother was not taking Noah to medical appointments or giving him medication as prescribed. Noah was then placed in his current foster home where he has been for the last 9 months. Child Protective Services developed a reunification plan upon his placement in the foster home. Services provided for Noah include individual and family counseling, medication management, and weekly supervised visitation with his mother. Noah’s most current diagnosis is mood disorder, not otherwise specified (NOS); attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), combined type; and learning disorder, NOS. His current medications include Abilify® and Concerta®. His full scale IQ is 72 and he receives special education services. I began working with Noah after he was placed in his foster home. During my initial intake with his mother, she stated that Noah met all of his developmental milestones on time. She denied any alcohol or drug use during her pregnancy but admitted to smoking cigarettes. She described Noah as active and having a temper from an early age. She said his kindergarten teacher had voiced concerns about his inattention and behavior, and it had been recommended that he be evaluated for ADHD. After Noah had set a fire in his home’s bathroom, his mother had him examined, and he was diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed medication. There is no known history of sexual abuse, and Noah’s mother reports that while she and her ex-husband had frequent verbal fights, there was no physical abuse in the home. Within his current foster home there have been some difficult moments, but Noah has acclimated to the family. He attends their church and is involved in the church’s youth program. Noah and his foster brother get along and enjoy each other’s company. Noah’s foster parents are active participants in working with Noah’s plan and maintain good communication with his providers. At our first session, Noah explained he was in foster care because “my mother can’t take care of me.” I asked if there was anything he would like to change about himself, and he said to “act better” so he could live with his mother again. My assessment made clear that although Noah is 10 years old, his developmental level is younger. I began working with him using cognitive behavioral play therapy. Noah’s play was very aggressive, and he struggled with appropriately expressing himself and working through different play-based scenarios. I focused on improving Noah’s coping skills. Noah has begun to identify his feelings, and he has learned about triggers related to his anger and the impact on his thoughts and feelings. Noah has continued to have scheduled supervised visitations with his mother; however, she has failed to keep many of her scheduled visits. On the days she misses appointments, Noah exhibits increased negative behaviors at school and at the foster home. As part of my role, I am in contact with his foster mother and CPS social worker. It became clear that Noah’s mother had not been following through with the reunification plan, and social services is pursing termination of her parental rights. Noah’s foster mother reported that she and her husband would like to adopt Noah. They are unsure of how to talk to him about the upcoming termination hearing and their interest in adoption. I offered to facilitate this discussion with Noah and his foster parents. In preparation for the upcoming court hearing to terminate parental rights, the social worker discovered Noah’s maternal grandmother was full-blooded Native American and has tribal registration. This information had not been in any of Noah’s prior records. According to the Indian Children Welfare Act (ICWA), the registered tribe needs to be included in Noah’s placement plan. ICWA sets federal requirements that apply to state child custody proceedings involving an Indian child who is a member of or eligible for membership in a federally recognized tribe. The CPS social worker states Noah will need to be placed in a Native American foster home.

Discussion 2: Neurobiology, Client Presentation, and Pharmacological Treatment Plans

Developing appropriate pharmacological treatment plans requires medical and mental health professionals to consider all potential factors that may be contributing to the client’s psychopathology. Contributing factors may include family history of mental illness (Preston, O’Neal, & Talaga, 2010), personal history, life circumstances, and drug abuse. Additionally, neurotransmitter malfunctions (genetic or self-induced) may manifest as diagnosable mental illnesses. Mental health care teams (e.g., counselors, medical doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and support teams) need to consider all of these factors in diagnosing and treating psychopathology.

For this Discussion, review the document “Neurobiology Considerations Case Study: Suzy” found in this week’s Learning Resources and consider the recommendations you might make to treat Suzy.

·       Post a brief description of the possible pharmacological recommendations for treating Suzy.

·       Explain any neurobiological considerations that inform your recommendations.

·       Explain the benefits and limitations of your recommendations.

·       Justify your recommendations based on the Learning Resources and current literature.

System integration – discussion board 1

It is said that almost every company or enterprise has a variety of applications and systems which are necessary for its operations to be conducted in a systematic and coordinated way. Most of the times, this integration of applications and systems is a business requirement as well. But it can become a substantial test for IT. As a student of Information Technology, discuss at least three major challenges that System Integration is facing in this era.

I need one answer for the Discussion Board and 3 responses for students.

Each responses 3 lines or more.

Thanks,

The Case Study: Module 1

The Green Organization is a conglomerate of many smaller business units. The organization has offices globally. Some offices are contracted independent agents representing the interests of the business unit. The Green Organization was founded over 50 years ago and has combined gross revenues of around $1 Billion. The leadership in the corporate office has been solid for the past 20 years. The CEO emeritus and Founder Jonathan A. Green has stepped down from his position to take a less active role in the daily operations and semi-retire. He has prepared his successor, his son Jordan A. Green and mentored him for the past 5 years to take over the role as head of the organization. The Green family are the owners of the organization. Jonathan owns 75% of the company. Other family members and creditors have partial shares making up the remaining 25%.

Jordan has taken over the current role of CEO and Executive Board Member in the last year. He previously has served in executive roles in the different business units which include: Finance, Investment, Real Estate Holdings Group, Mergers and Acquisitions, Consulting, Training and Development, and the Corporate office. His latest position was Co-CEO with his father for  six months prior to his father’s departure. He is a firm believer in productive, effective, and innovative training that improves overall performance.

He is looking to bring on multiple consultants to improve the productivity of the different business units and the organization as a whole. He has an idea of what he wants. There are many different types of consultants available. He is looking for an explanation of the different types of consultants.

Please address:

  1. Using Hale (2007) Introduction and Chapter 1, along with Pershing (2006) Chapters 1-3 explain the role of a Management Consultant, Business Consultant, Training Consultant and Performance Consultant. How can each assist the organization and scope of practice?
  2. How might these consultants be best used in The Green Organization?
  3. View these two video clips at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dnt2Yl-momA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdbReKzaYVY
  • Comment on the critical difference between training and performance consulting.
  • Why is the Collaborative form of consulting most preferred (and successful)?
  • Share your insights with your classmates.
  • Please remember that your work should be a minimum of 100 words per response to each question and should follow APA format with the use of citations to credit your resources.

Performance Consulting

This term you will develop a consulting plan that you will submit in Week 8. This should target the industry in which you intend to work upon graduation. You are the business owner and will develop the company based on your expertise and knowledge in your industry. You are required to use outside research for this project throughout the term. You may want to work on this plan throughout the term. This is an extensive project, so please be proactive and do not wait until the last minute to begin working on this assignment.

This week you will complete the first part of the project with an introduction to the company describing your target audience, the client issue or problem, your objective and the desired outcome for consideration. You will then create your company’s purpose statement and mission statement. You will also introduce the following topics: Strategy, Marketing, Personnel, Products and Services, Demographic served Action Plan, and the Evaluation Process.

The only part that must be fully developed this week is the company introduction, purpose statement, and mission statement. You will fill in the additional sections in the coming weeks of this course.

Your work this week should be a minimum of 3 pages in length following proper APA format.

Week 2

The Progressive Case Study

The Green Organization serves all socioeconomic groups across the globe. The Real Estate Holdings group leases and sells luxury apartments in Manhattan. They also own and manage a portfolio of homes they lease to the disadvantaged, or severely infirm. The teams employed in this group range from high end real estate sales to the socially conscious leasing agent, a broad spectrum.

The Mergers and Acquisitions group buys and sells companies across the globe. The group not only does this for the Green Organization, they also broker business sales, mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships for clients. Brokers work with current and prospective clients to determine what the right business is, how to structure the deal, fix and flip, and business development. Personnel are diverse in professional sales and business skills. The average employee in this group has a minimum BA and 10 years in this industry. Turnover is very low. All personnel are well compensated.

The Finance Group provides funding and investing sources for the other groups as well as external clients. Clients can include automobile dealerships, lines of credit at retail stores, personal loans, and micro loans. The group manages a portfolio of around $10 Billion. The company owns 50% of the portfolio. The remaining 50% is client funds. The personnel range from Aggressive hard driving sales people working with large organization to fund development or sell loan portfolios to the small business lender and individual lender to make micro-loans (amounts under 10K) to start a business.

Consider this:

  1. Based on your reading of the case information above as well as in Hale and Pershing this week, describe your target audience. Who would you work best with and why? Please explain your answer.
  2. Describe what demographic audience would you not work well with and why. Please explain your answer.
  3. View the clip on about Caterpillar- Running Learning Like a Business (2:37) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdZcV3SxCzM&feature=related and comment on Dave Vance’s (former President of Caterpillar University) view of performance consulting.  What parts of his discussion point out the strategic influence a performance consultant needs to possess within an organization?  Share your insights with your classmates.

Please remember that your work should be a minimum of 100 words per response to each question and should follow APA format with the use of citations to credit your resources.

The Green Organization Executive Team has met with you and their Leadership Teams for each group. The key objectives for increasing the performance are decided upon. The challenges now are training the groups and the teams within the group to have a clear and concise understanding of the next steps in the process.

We are quick to judge or blame when the results are less than desired. How will you design, develop, implement, and evaluate the training program you have presented?
