Essay over The Killer Angels, by Michael Shaara DUE: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2020

For your essay assignment, you will need to read The Killer Angles, by Michael Shaara. It covers the 4 days of the Battle of Gettysburg. When reading begin thinking about the topics and questions I have listed below so you can answer the question: According to the book, The Killer Angels, by Michael Shaara, why did the south lose this battle? What mistakes did they make? Were these mistakes big or small or did it really matter? I mean, a mistake is a mistake. I only want to know about his battle, NOT THE WHOLE WAR! You can focus on one or all of these things when writing your paper.

Several ideas are:

Technical and Strategic Development

A Nation Divided

Loyalty and Command Errors

Aristocracy – both fighting for and against

There is also the prejudice of racism throughout. Remember the impact on the Union army of seeing a black man up close for the first time? They were a little surprised by their reaction.

Some other things to think about while reading:

Who were the people on either side?

Where did they come from?

What was their background?

What about loyalty of the men to their officers?

Were these men loyal, loyal to a fault, or did they ignore their officers?

Which side was more ethnically diverse?

Which side had aristocratic tendencies and which did not?

What do the men on both sides have in common?

What is the main conflict?

Obviously war, but war between whom?

North and South?

American against American?

Brother against brother?

Black against white?

Does the technology on either side make a difference?

Shaara Essay

You only need the above information on the first page.

  • The main body of the paper should be a minimum of 600 words. (About 2 pages)

You may write more than that if you find it necessary to go further, but please don’t turn in something 5 more pages long.

  • typed in 12 point Times New Roman font
  • 1 inch margins, double spaced.
  • You must cite examples from the book to prove your points. You should use some quotes from the book, and you also need to cite the book when you are using the book’s ideas in your own words.
  • In general, you ought to be citing the book at least 1-2 times a page to show you’ve read it. If you don’t, your grade will be penalized anywhere from 5 to 25 points, depending on how much you failed to do so.
  • Further, you need to make sure you cite from the whole range of the book, not just small parts of it. If you don’t do this, your grade may be reduced 5, 10, or 15 points or more depending on how much of the book you’re not using when you ought to be. If I feel convinced you didn’t read it at all, you will get an F (50 points out of 100), which may itself be reduced further by other problems.
