Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a critical aspect of any continuing education, but especially in the practice of a BSN-prepared nurse. There are many ways to integrate EBP findings into nursing practice within my work environment (Melnyk et al., 2018). One way I will continue to integrate EBP into my workplace is by monitoring the quality measures closely to identify any trends that lead to negative patient outcomes early before it becomes widespread and problematic. If a negative trend is identified, I can deep dive into the cause of the issue and do research to support changes necessary to improve patient outcomes. Secondly, to do this, there will need to be mentors and educators to lead the practice change with a process in place (Woods, 2018). This is necessary to ensure that proper protocol, policy, and procedure are followed. This is also needed so that there is continuous education on the EBP for the staff. Quality measures will be tracked to ensure that the implemented practice change does in fact stick for health care provider practices and indeed improves outcomes. Many barriers can present themselves during this process. One common barrier is the perception that EBP implementation is time-consuming or burdensome (Shortell, et al., 2017). To overcome this likely challenge, the nurse educator and mentor need to have a plan in place to provide support to alleviate the challenges faced that may be perceived as time-consuming or burdensome. They should be present and readily available to the best their time allows to provide physical and cognitive support when the change is occurring if the staff hits a roadblock. The staff will need to be held accountable for implementing the change and have resources so that it can be done without too much headache.
