For this paper, you will produce a review of a film through a sociological lens, focusing on intersectionality. Pick a film that you can watch over and over again and can pause/play throughout. A movie on DVD or streaming online (e.g. Netflix) is best.

This is not a summary of the film but an analysis of the film using sociological concepts that we have discussed and read about throughout the semester.

You must analyze the film using sociological concepts that we have discussed and read about throughout the semester. For the analysis, please answer the following questions:

In the introduction of your paper, include a brief synopsis of the film, and describe the main characters, including their character names. 5 points

Using your sociological imagination, what is your review of this movie? Make sure to review the sociological imagination on our Canvas Module 5 when responding to this question, and include a definition. 5 points

Analyze this film using intersectionality. Race/ethnicity MUST be included in this analysis, along with at least one of the following concepts: social class, gender, sexuality, age, ability/disability. 5 points

How is intersectionality discussed or displayed in the movie?

How does the film help you to understand intersectionality?

  1. Analyze this film using another concept from class, for example: racial fallacies, redlining, racial profiling, interracial relationships, etc. 5 points
  2. How is this concept discussed or displayed in the movie?
  3. How does the movie help you to understand this concept?

How does who you are (your personal, intersectional self and biases) affect your viewing of the film? 5 points

  1. When watching the film through a sociological lens, how has the movie changed for you? 5 points

  3. The paper should be between 5-7 pages in length, typed, double-spaced, and MLA format.

You will need to include at least 6 sources in the paper:

  1. You can use sources we have used in class or sources that you have found outside of class.
  2. The Desmond & Emirbayer text counts as one source, regardless of how many times you cite it.
  3. At least 3 sources must be from peer-reviewed academic journals or texts (the Desmond & Emirbayer text meets this criteria).
  4. Use these sources to support your analysis of the film.

The Works Cited page does not count towards the 5-7 page requirement.

All films must be approved by the instructor by the due date in Canvas.

Certain films are prohibited; review the Prohibited Film List in Module 1. You will receive zero (0) points for submitting a Film Analysis Paper written on a prohibited film.
