Resilience: The Biology of Stress & the Science of Hope
Many times in our field of work we work with children and their families and make assumptions. We assume that their morning smiles or laughter are signs that everything is okay. We assume that something is “wrong” with a child that is very active. We must be reminded that how they present themselves to us does not tell us the whole story of what they have gone through or are going through presently. What is their home environment like? Is there abuse occurring now? In the past? Are they being exposed to drug use? Finding answers to these questions, among others, can help determine if toxic stress is affecting the child or parent.
For this assignment, you will need to watch the documentary Resilience: The Biology Of Stress And The Science Of Hope (see VIDEO Resilience: The Biology of Stress & the Science of Hope in this module). The documentary reveals that toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death. While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk, no segment of society is immune. Resilience, however, also chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back. Trailblazers in pediatrics, education, and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress—and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose.
After you have watched the documentary, you will need to answer the questions on the assignment. See below:
